Who should participate

Modelers

Active research teams developing migration models. Solo PhD students, postdocs with their own implementation, established modeling labs — all welcome. Participation requires working with a model that produces some form of mobility output for spatial units in Bangladesh.

Experts

Researchers with relevant expertise on Bangladesh and/or climate-related mobility who are not running a model. Experts join the network's regular meetings and provide domain consultation to the modeling teams.

  • Agent-based models
  • Gravity models
  • Radiation models
  • Integrated assessment models with migration modules
  • Machine learning approaches (statistical, deep learning, hybrid)
  • Other architectures producing comparable outputs

What participation involves

  1. Receive the curated input dataset and protocol document within five working days of registration.
  2. Attend two participant webinars per year, scheduled with the cohort and alternating time zones. Recordings are available if you cannot attend live.
  3. Run your model on the shared question for the Bangladesh case at your own pace. The first major milestone is the iEMSs 2026 Dublin synthesis session, July 12–16, 2026.
  4. Submit your outputs and methodological documentation by [VERIFY deadline] for inclusion in the synthesis and the Climatic Change topical collection. Participating modelers are asked to share their code and model findings with the network.
  5. Retain ownership of your model and outputs. 3MIP synthesizes findings across teams; individual model outputs and code remain their authors' work and may be published independently.

Frequently asked questions

Does it cost anything to participate?
No. Participation is free.
I'm not a modeler — can I still participate?
Yes. Researchers with relevant expertise on Bangladesh and/or climate-related mobility can register as experts. The network holds regular meetings — scheduled to alternate time zones so no region always takes the inconvenient slot — and experts contribute domain consultation to the modeling teams.
What if my model is still in development?
You can register and join webinars now. Output submission for the synthesis requires a working model by [VERIFY deadline].
Who owns the outputs?
You own your model and outputs. 3MIP synthesizes across teams; you remain the author of your own work.
Do I have to share my code?
Yes. In participating, modelers are asked to share their code and model findings with the network.
Can I join after July 2026?
Yes. The Bangladesh case continues after the iEMSs synthesis. Future cases will have their own registration windows.
What if I want to use additional data sources?
The curated data list may be expanded, but any new dataset must be made known and available to all teams. Contact project coordination to request the inclusion of an additional dataset.
How are decisions made about protocol changes?
The three co-leads decide, in consultation with the advisory committee. Major protocol revisions are announced to registered participants before they take effect.
What is the Climatic Change topical collection?
A planned topical collection in the journal Climatic Change for 3MIP-affiliated papers. The formal call is anticipated for late 2026 [VERIFY].
Will participating modelers be listed publicly?
Only with your explicit consent. A public directory is planned for a future version of the site.
